Wow - I haven't had a chance to read this in forever - seriously - between flying all over the place and spending most of my time in VA at Kate's family farm, where internet is super slow and I wasn't in front of a computer much anyways.
NYE was a blast - got to hang with some of who I'd consider my best friends from college, which is odd because most of them I met right after I graduated. We all chilled out on Kate's farm, made a ruckus in her family's guest cabin, and drank a little too much Southern Comfort and a drink that is being referred to as the Brainwash (a mixture of Bacardi Zombie mix, which we passed around when I first met these guys at a party Phil and I threw years ago, and Champagne, which is delicious).
Resolutions for 2009:
- don't start smoking again - do as many shows as possible (do the craft fairs, but also do comic cons, a couple of anime cons, maybe a horror con, and possibly a leg of Warped Tour and Bamboozle Left) - leave my job - do shirt releases in bigger chunks rather than trickles (ie, release five shirts at a time rather than one or two shirts every couple of months) - work on my fun projects: I've started outlining a Choose Your Own Adventure book (this kind of came from my coloring book project), I'm making paper dolls, and other stupid fun stuff.
Also, I have a Twitter account now, it seems:
http://www.twitter.com/davidseibei
(some Japanese asshole had already taken Seibei. WHAT A DICK! Yes, it was probably his actual first name.)

Tomorrow I'm flying back to Virginia, and it will be my first actual break from work (ie, SEIBEI) in months and months. I'm currently up this late because I have a ton of orders to pack, orders that I had planned on taking care of last week but was work-blocked by about a foot and a half of snow.
As I trudged up the driveway at around midnight, running into a few friends of mine coming down to their cars after hanging out at my house with my roommates before everyone leaves for winter break, holding a box of freshly-made shirts, I lamented giving up 95% of my social life when SEIBEI is busy, and a pretty decent portion of it even when it isn't.
In good news:

That's me and Eric Nakamura, one of the founders of Giant Robot, at UNIQUE Los Angeles last week. He stopped by and we chatted for a bit, and I nervously somehow managed to tell him a shitload about myself. Giant Robot is in no small part responsible for where I've ended up, so this was huge for me. He is so nice! I managed to tell him so much about myself because he asked questions that allowed me to just go all over the place - maybe because he's interviewed so many people?
I also met the founder of Beautiful/Decay, who lavished me with praise (and is a really nice dude, to boot), and the head of the POOL trade show, who said "your graphics are phenomenal" and said we needed to talk about me doing the next show.
For now it's a bummer at times but things like this help.

DEAR LOS ANGELES BUDDIES:
I will be arriving in Los Angeles around 10 am tomorrow, getting my rental car, and then...maybe going to grab lunch and/or popping by Skuld's place (if that's cool, I need to check with her) before heading over to the "vendor networking/VIP party" for the show I'm doing. then after that, whooooo knows.
Saturday and Sunday I'll be doing the show from 11 - 7. Due to my being hell of sick the past two days (some terrible stomach bug, but I have been all better since yesterday afternoon), inventory will be a little low, but we'll make do.
I head back Monday at 2, wheeee.

Right now: Bacardi and Diet Dr. Pepper, blasting my iPod headphones, latex gloves on, a fresh batch of "zombie gore" and 50+ zombie hunter shirts ready to ride.
Tomorrow: Taking a day off work to hang with Chris Hoyer in NYC, nerd out, and get a private tour of the Marvel Comics offices (all thanks to a hell of nice dude who bought shirts off of me seven months ago who offered to give me a tour if I was ever up for it).
It's a tough ass road (or maybe a tough assroad?), but on nights like these it's pretty fucking rad.

| SEIBEI X SOULJA BOY COLLABO |
[21 Sep 2008|09:46pm] |
Kim Corum just called me up to let me know she'd seen Thriller Was A Documentary in the latest Soulja Boy video, for "Donk". LIKE TO HEAR IT HERE IT GOES:
Check at 1:32 for the first appearance, and a few more shots sprinkled throughout. The dude wearing it is GaTa, an up and coming rapper who really likes SEIBEI for some reason.
It's a crazy fucking world we live in.

My computer is still off being repaired, so no shots of Amsterdam or Copenhagen yet. The past few weeks have had a lot of ups and downs etc etc.
Here is something that I'm doing half to try out a semi-big sale (which I haven't done in a long-ass time), somewhat out of boredom, and to help alleviate the costs of some new releases that I'm working on. Let's hope it goes well:

Anyway, sorry I've fallen off the face of the earth. I'm working on it.

[26 Jun 2008|12:01am] |
Okay, that post served its purpose, so I'm taking it down and going to bed now.
In other good news, tonight I felt genuine joy printing a new batch of Thriller shirts using a new technique. The print is now super-soft, and the colors pop way more...it's pretty sick. Sometimes when I'm printing an old design, it's just kind of like GRINDING THROUGH the print job, but tonight I got to try out this new technique and I remembered what I liked about printing well again.
Anyway, I'm really fucking tired, so it's time to go to bed. How is it 1:30 in the morning?

[25 Jun 2008|08:11am] |
When I sent my computer off to get a new hard drive, I backed up EVERYTHING on my computer, but now I cannot find any of my mp3s by the following bands and then some:
- Bonde Do Role - Daft Punk - Pet Shop Boys
I could buy most of this shit on iTunes again, but I'm still hoping I'll find those files on a disc somewhere. Until then, my iPod is only half of what it should be.
Fuck it, I'm going to buy the Daft Punk lie album again. It'll be worth it to hear it at work today.

[04 Mar 2008|07:27pm] |
Also!
Tonight, 8-11 PM EST, listen to WFMU to hear Patton Oswalt, Ted Leo, and Ben Gibbard performing songs for the WFMU pledge drive! I actually live in the broadcast area, but am listening to it via the internet because I don't have a radio in the house other than like clock radios.
I will be pledging $75 so I can get the new Patton Oswalt EP that is only available through the pledge drive tonight - so fucking limited edition - with cover art by THE LITTLE FRIENDS OF PRINTMAKING. It's like Jesus himself made this happen for me to spend money on.

| DEAR BOSTON BUDDIES |
[06 Dec 2007|08:59am] |
Sadly, we won't be staying in Boston on Saturday night. We're going to be stopping in Hartford, CT to crash on a buddy's couch, since I don't wanna make a 4 hour drive after selling shirts and being nice for about 10+ hours.
So, come say hi at the Bazaar Bizarre - it's at the Cyclorama! When you walk in, hang a right, and I'm there.

pet shop boys - somewhere |

So today, Kate and I had lunch together so I could give her my apartment key (she was giving me all the unexpired food in her fridge, since we moved her out of her apartment), and I was just ultra-bummed. My job this morning had been sucking ass and I was in one of those moods where I felt worthless for devoting so much time in my day to making t-shirts for things like stupid frat parties, softball tournaments, and other things I generally am not excited about. It just felt devoid of reward, especially after I'd had such a good time this weekend working on product design.
Lunch + seeing Kate cheered me up a bit, but I was still kind of bummed.
Fortunately, I started picking up my old rhythm again (I used to work full-time in the shop, and am suddenly full-time again after only doing a bit of automatic press work now and again), and I also realized that, if I play my cards right (ie get my financial shit together) I might never have to work in a shop again once I leave Blue Ridge. I think it would be healthy for me to have a day job that has little to nothing to do with t-shirts. I realized that outsourcing my work (I am at turns loathe to do this and absolutely excited to do this) wouldn't actually be that expensive, as long as I got maybe 50 shirts at a time of a particular design, which isn't muuuuuch to ask. And as long as I figured out a way to do the bulk of the work on the Zombie Hunter shirts on my own; this won't be as difficult as you might think.
anyway, I am now doing some work on the computer and putting off heading in to the shop - I've got some retail clients that need some shirts!

yesterday's labor day cookout at Warren and Marie's was spectacular - I got to see most of my favorite Richmond people in one shot, and Kate got to meet them which went pretty well. for instance, when Chris meets a girlfriend and hates her, I usually know it within about two minutes, so these days I'm either slow on the uptake or she went over well. I ate loads of burgers and we all sat around and played Rival Schools 2 on the dreamcast (I think the english title is "project justice"). on the way home I about went into a food coma. then Kate and I sat around and watched some of the american Office, which I am really, really liking.
today Kate and Lugo and I had chinese takeout for lunch and watched Mr. Show, and then Kate went off for a meeting and sometime between then and work I got totally filled with despair, like oh god how will I ever make it, blah blah, but then I realized that no one ever got anywhere by whining and that I needed to cut the shit and keep hustlin'.
work was okay. afterwards Lauren met me at the print shop and we got a decent load of orders ready, and then we went to Waffle House for strategy discussions and food. we've compiled a list of celebrities and personalities who we're going to send various shirts to, and I'm pretty fucking excited about it. the best part is, we're huge fans of all of these people, so we'll get to write spazzy-ass letters to them. I'm not expecting any big response, but if even one of them writes back and says something nice, I'll be fucking psyched. the worst case scenario is that they all get thrown away; the best case scenario is that I wake up in a bed full of money while Lauren's getting marriage proposals from Demetri Martin, Seth Rogen, and Andy Samberg.
anyway, it's pretty fucking late so I need to get to bed now.

| the front of the new Horrorshow shirt |
[29 Jul 2006|11:07am] |
as it turns out, I am a printing master. There's an initial run of about twenty-five of these that will be sold at tonight's show; the back says VIOLENCE SOLVES EVERYTHING.
the print is maybe an inch higher on all of the rest; this was the first one that I'm keeping for myself and I decided the print needed to be a bit higher on the shirt after looking at this one.
also, Kate and I now have tickets to see the PET SHOP BOYS in DC in October - I overslept a little bit (I actually dreamt I was buying tickets online), so we're twenty rows back, but that still puts us just a smidge behind the middle row of the orchestra pit. I'll still be able to see Neil Tennant's handsome face and hear his voice, so I'm fine.

first off, I am a complete sucker and am totally bummed about last week's Project Runway castoff, but am super-psyched about who won.
I am still reasonably stressed out, but doing okay. I think I'm going to have things reasonably under control. I'm going to go look at graphics tablets soon. oh, and I need to call my grandmother for her birthday!
yesterday Lauren and Mary came over for Yuan Ho lunch specials and some tv; we were later met by Leslie, Thien, and Kate, and we all chilled out and watched Arrested Development - good times.
due to popular request, I think "I Like To Say Things and Eat Stuff" will, in fact, be made into a t-shirt. hooray? also, a gal is going to send me pictures of her and her grandma rocking out in SEIBEI gear, which is awesome.
also, I know that the Stargate isn't "magical", but if you say this around the right people (ie, girlfriends who are really into Stargate), they will sit up and say "IT'S NOT MAGIC!" in pretty much the most hilarious voice ever.
